Be sure to know the exact work you are authorizing when choosing a transmission specialist (i.e. cost estimate, external or internal diagnosis or actual transmission repair).
Most technicians are willing to explain the work that was done and show the damaged parts to you if asked. Additionally, you may ask for a breakdown of the completed work and for a damaged-parts report. Should you desire to inspect damaged parts pulled from your transmission yourself, be sure to ask the mechanic before you authorize the work and not after. Just like all contracts, be sure you understand every aspect of the work you’re authorizing. If your authorization is given over the phone, be sure to have a full understanding of what you’re approving. Remember: an authorization given over the phone is a binding contract.
Things To Look For
- Is the shop a member of the Better Business Bureau? The Bureau can give you an accurate report on the company and its history in dealing with customers.
- Is the company a member of any transmission groups such as the Automatic Transmission Rebuilder Association (ATRA) or Automatic Service Association (ASA) or is it part of a national franchise that offers
training programs to keep technicians up-to-date on new technology? - Does the company participate in continuing education and training programs?
- Is the shop well equipped with the proper diagnostic tools for your vehicle? One of the easiest things to look for is the hydraulic lifts needed to raise your car.
- Is the shop clean and professional looking? Does it appear to be well run?
